BONNIE BLUE (YOU SHOULD KNOW) [ORIGINAL]

Performed by: LaPret
Written by Larry Thurman Pretlow II for South Capitol Recordings [ASCAP]
Song Recording Finalized: December 10, 2012
From the world of LIFE AS LARRY: THE GEMINI FILES

About the Song

Long before LIFE AS LARRY: THE GEMINI FILES was conceived, Larry "LaPret" Pretlow II wrote and recorded "Bonnie Blue (You Should Know)," completing the original recording on December 10, 2012, shortly after the reelection of President Barack Obama. Written during a period of reflection on race, patriotism, freedom, and American history, the song questions whether symbolic progress alone could resolve America's deeper historical divisions—ideas that would later become increasingly prominent in the nation's political and cultural discourse. Blending Civil War imagery with a fractured love story, "Bonnie Blue" becomes both a person and an idea: a symbol of love, nationhood, identity, and the enduring weight of history.

The Great Hurt

Within LIFE AS LARRY: THE GEMINI FILES, those same themes become woven into the mystery of The Great Hurt—a catastrophic historical rupture whose consequences continue echoing into the present. Detective Larry Pretlow's investigation begins with impossible evidence: newly discovered documents that date to the Civil War, anonymous audio files from an unseen sender, and memories that refuse to remain buried. Every discovery points toward the same unanswered question: What happened during The Great Hurt, and why does history refuse to let it end?

The Bonnie Blue File

Within the story, "Bonnie Blue (You Should Know)" is not a song. To Detective Larry Pretlow, it is The Bonnie File—one of the mysterious pieces of evidence connected to The Great Hurt. The audience experiences that file through music, but Detective Pretlow encounters it as part of an investigation that defies chronology, where history behaves like evidence and memories become something that can be examined, questioned, and audited.

As the case unfolds, the contents of The Bonnie File begin to echo throughout the investigation. Dr. Elisia Blue quietly tells the detective, "I'm Dr. Blue... call me Bonnie." Strange visions of gunpowder and high grass intrude upon the present. Civil War imagery resurfaces in places where it should not exist. What first appears to be an ordinary song gradually reveals itself to the audience as something far more significant: another fragment of The Great Hurt. Like every file in The Gemini Files, it does not explain the mystery—it preserves it, leaving the audience to decide whether they are listening to a forgotten memory, a historical echo, or evidence from a reality that never completely healed.

Lyrics

Originally written and recorded in 2012, the lyrics below are presented as originally composed by Larry "LaPret" Pretlow II. While the musical cast of LIFE AS LARRY: THE GEMINI FILES has newly recorded the composition for the official soundtrack, the original version remains the foundation of the work and the audience's introduction to The Bonnie File—one of the central pieces of evidence surrounding The Great Hurt.

Bonnie Blue (You Should Know)

Sing it for me Alicia,

Hook Alicia (LaPret)

I dont need ya babe (hurrah hurrah)

I just love you baby (hurrah hurrah)

I’ll get over you babe (hurrah hurrah)

Its a leery place (hurrah hurrah)

I’m just saying

I just think that you show know

I’m just saying (yeah)

I just think that you should know (C’mon)

(You should know)

LaPret Rap 1

Here’s to our confederacy

Strong we are and brave

Like patriots of old, We’ll fight

(No, that’s just a saying)

Now that’s gone with the wind

Scarlett O’hara

I’m just south of Atlanta

Yeah the storm took my Tara

That’s all I ever known

Like a talk with a bone

But what’s a man to do

If he can’t go home to home

I rather than submit to shame or to die

Yes, I would prefer

But I wish to be with her

They say hurrah hurrah

To a flag with one star

And yet here I am

I gotta love you from afar

So proud we will be

When we are in love

And so scarred we get

When enough is enough

LaPret Bridge Rap

If love is a fiction

That I am a martian

And I guess that explains

Why I am here marchin

Proud for Bonnie Blue

But you thank God for Lincoln

He fought to save the union

But you always been a victim

Hook Alicia (LaPret)

I dont need ya babe (hurrah hurrah)

I just love you baby (hurrah hurrah)

I’ll get over you babe (hurrah hurrah)

Its a leery place (hurrah hurrah)

I’m just saying  (Bonnie Blue I just thought you should know)

I just think that you should know (Bonnie Blue I just thought you should know)

I’m just saying (Bonnie Blue I just think you should know)

I just think that you should know (Bonnie Blue I just think you should know)

(You should know)

LaPret Rap 2

It’s a little known fact

You think you got it like that

Now do you really really think

They just did it like that

Everything has a reason

Every plant has a season

And us being free

Was never part of Lincoln's reason

Bonnie Blue so loud and rebellious

I guess now we know

Why Dorthy left Kansas

Black is a crime

We just gettin’ off easy

Obama a President

That’s just a white man’s discrepancy

The nation is changing man

This shit is getting worst

Why else do you think

That a nigga had to write this verse

I’m just saying

I just think you should know

Or am I just spilling

The stew on the stove

I don’t know man

L-L-S

I’m tryna drive and send you this text

LaPret Bridge Rap 2

If history is fiction

Than I am a martian

Let it explain itself

Why I’m out goodwill hunting

Hook Alicia (LaPret)

I dont need ya babe (hurrah hurrah)

I just love you baby (hurrah hurrah)

I’ll get over you babe (hurrah hurrah)

Its a leery place (hurrah hurrah)

I’m just saying  (Bonnie Blue I just thought you should know)

I just think that you should know (Bonnie Blue I just thought you should know)

I’m just saying (Bonnie Blue I just think you should know)

I just think that you should know (Bonnie Blue I just think you should know)

(You should know)

(Instrumental)

Hook Alicia (LaPret)

I dont need ya babe (hurrah hurrah)

I just love you baby (hurrah hurrah)

I’ll get over you babe (hurrah hurrah)

Its a leery place (hurrah hurrah)

I’m just saying  (Bonnie Blue I just thought you should know)

I just think that you should know (Bonnie Blue I just thought you should know)

I’m just saying (Bonnie Blue I just think you should know)

I just think that you should know (Bonnie Blue I just think you should know)

(You should know)

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah

Hurrah hurrah
