LaPret

Entertainer & Businessman

Born Larry Thurman Pretlow II on June 19, 1989, in Washington, D.C., LaPret is an American rapper, songwriter, producer, educator, and policy advocate whose career serves as a bridge between the arts and civic leadership. He began his musical journey in 2006 as a founding member of the Washington, D.C.-based rap group Profound Intent, a collective defined by its raw hip-hop energy and community-focused lyricism.

In 2007, LaPret transitioned toward solo work while remaining an active writer and member of ASCAP, eventually releasing his first solo track, "Do a Dub." His music career reached a pivotal turning point in 2012 with the release of the single "Problem in Harlem," which garnered critical acclaim from the Washington City Paper for its unique fusion of politics and community advocacy, establishing LaPret as a "conscious" artist dedicated to bridging the gap between street culture and civic engagement.

Parallel to his artistic pursuits, LaPret has maintained a robust commitment to public service and education. He served as a Middle School Science Teacher for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), where he used his platform to mentor local youth through science instruction and advocate for educational equity.

LaPret's passion for community progress led him into the political arena, where he sought public office in Maryland as a candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates (District 13) in 2018 and the Howard County Board of Education in 2020. This unique blend of classroom experience and political advocacy informs his current academic pursuit: a Doctorate in Law and Policy (DLP). This follows a distinguished academic record including a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Law and Public Policy from Liberty University, where he graduated with High Distinction, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and an Associate of Arts in Legal Studies from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

In recent years, LaPret has expanded his creative footprint into digital media as the creator and host of the groundbreaking video podcast series LIFE As Larry: Stop This Car. The show introduces a format he describes as "Reflective Reality Therapy," which combines unscripted life experiences with themes of personal healing, men’s mental health, and emotional growth. Whether through his music, his tenure in the D.C. school system, or his high-level policy research, LaPret continues to operate under the mission of his company, LaPret World LLC, to educate, inspire, and provoke thought across diverse social landscapes.
